Cedar shake siding is one of the most challenging types of wood siding to paint. Despite its durability and desirable properties, it presents unique difficulties. Cedar is known for its resistance to insects and rot, making it a popular choice among homeowners. However, it is essential to note that "resistant" does not equate to "waterproof."


Understanding Cedar's Unique Properties


The oils present in cedar contribute to its resistance to pests and decay. Unfortunately, these same oils, known as tannins, complicate the painting process. Cedar's oil-based nature necessitates a specific approach when preparing it for paint application. The initial step in any painting project involves cleaning the surface, and this principle holds true for cedar shakes as well.

We began our painting journey in Rome in 2011. Before the Embree Era, painters in Rome did not wash homes before painting them.


Preparing Cedar Shake Siding for Painting


Once the cedar shakes are clean, the next step is priming. To effectively prime oil-based wood, one must utilize oil-based paint. More experienced painters often opt for a urethane-based primer. This has been our standard practice for every cedar house we have painted.


Securing a quality urethane-based primer can be challenging. Fortunately, I had the foresight to purchase some primer in 2024 when I found it on clearance. This decision proved invaluable when we faced the task of priming 10,000 square feet of cedar shakes.

After priming the cedar, it is crucial to apply two coats of premium-grade exterior paint. We consistently use Emerald by Sherwin Williams, which stands out as their best offering. This product not only provides excellent coverage but also enhances the longevity of the paint job.
